It's coming together! (and make a guess!)

So, as of yesterday I officially reached the $4000 fundraising mark, and I've been absolutely blown away by eveyone's generosity and I have to extend a HUGE thank you to all of you who have helped me participate in this. I can't thank you enough. I wouldn't have been able to do this on my own. So thank you thank you!

The countdown of when I leave is now 12 days! And after trips to various bike stores, organizing travel supplies, and being on hold with Delta airlines trying to solve the problem of my flight being changed...I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The big thing to do now is to figure out a creative way to make my laundry stand out from everyone else's in a big pile of 30 people's laundry! With some things I've really tried to get bright or original colors...but bike shorts haven't branched out much in the selection that's out there. There's just a whole lot of black. And socks? Can you imagine sorting 30 people's socks? I guess I'll believe it when I see it.

So the things that I've heard the most from people giving me advice when they hear that I'll be biking in the south in the middle of the summer are two things:

1) Drink a lot of water, and
2) Wear a lot of sunscreen.

And trust me, I'll be the first to stress the importance of number two. I think the worst pain I've ever felt in my life has been from some REALLY bad sunburns. Those can make you feel miserable. So, I know that I'm going to be piling on the sunscreen any chance I get and I thought it could be kind of fun to make a little guessing game competition out of this. You all probably remember the jars of jelly beans that your teacher would pass around for the kids to guess the number of how many are in the jar. Well, for this one you can guess how many bottles of sunscreen I will go through spending two and a half months in the sun! (maybe not as cool as the jelly beans, because I can't offer you the jar of candy as your prize...but I can promise that the winner will get something that I will pick up on my trip just for this prize!)

So you can reply to this post with your guess, or you can shoot me an email. Just be sure to put your name if you reply to this post so I know who you are. When I first thought about this I was just curious how many bottles I could possibly go through, and thought it would be fun to involve more people. So guess away!

How Much Sunscreen Should I Apply?
The average user of sunscreen tends to use significantly less sunscreen than the amount required to achieve the SPF listed on the container.

obviously, that one was NOT helpful
------

Q. What SPF do I need? How much do I need for a trip?

A. If properly applied (1 1/4 ounce per full body coverage) you seldom need more than an SPF 15. See the paragraph below for when you may need more. However, most people put on only half of the recommended FDA standard. An SPF 15 applied at half rate is effectively an SPF 7, better than nothing but still not a true Sun Block. If you can discipline yourself to put on a generous amount, then after it has fully absorbed into the skin, you will benefit by having less chemicals in the skin which allows your skin to breathe easier. If you just can't bring yourself to lather it on then jump to an SPF 30 which, when half applied, still leaves you with an effective protection of an SPF 15. If you're sensitive to oxybensone or benzephenone then stick with the SPF 15 which generally does not include that Sun Block.

In planning a trip, use the 1 1/4 ounce per person per day figure as a guideline. If you're building a tan, or reducing your skin exposure via clothing, then reduce your anticipated need accordingly. Keep in mind that a soaked cotton shirt yields protection equivalent to only an SPF of 4 to 8 only and therefore you may need to wear a Sun Block below the shirt if exposed to water or sweat.

hmmm..this one was a tad bit more helpful.

so..my bottle of sunblock is a little over 10 oz.

and your whole trip is 68 days (i think..i just counted all the days on bike and build website)

so....68 day x 1.25 oz = 85 oz

that means only 8 bottles.

i think that's BOGUS. I just did all that math..and i'm not trusting that answer.

so...i'm going to guess....29. that's a cool number. and if you use 29, then you will be super unburned (or so i hope).

yay. i finally made a guess. and it has no mathematical significance whatever. but that's okay. i'm proud.

kara I love you!

There may have to be a special award for the person who put the most thought and research into this answer.

:)

THANKS MANDY! I just realized...I did incorrect math. according to the little calculation...it needs 9 bottles. not 8. hahaha.

But I still guess 29.

Kara, that's interesting how a cotton t-shirt soaked in water or sweat only yields protection of SPF 4 to 8. I would never think to wear sunblock under my shirt. I know our jerseys aren't made of cotton, but I wonder what SPF they would be.

Cause GUARANTEED I'll be sweaty, haha.
